A Tragic Slaughterhouse Romance
... and also, a reflection on the only thing worth bragging about
The Pun
The Prayer
Often, I have wanted to be above average at something.
It is appealing to know more than the average person, have more influence than the average person, or achieve more than the average person.
And whether I have achieved this or not, it turns out that being above average doesn't make you all that special. After all, nearly half of humanity is!
And even if I were truly exceptional in any area, it wouldn't make me all that special in the big scheme of things. After all, it's nigh near impossible to impress the Almighty!
But if there is something worth bragging about, maybe it's not in an intrinsic characteristic.
Maybe the thing worth boasting about is not in always knowing what's right But in being known by the God who is always compassionate; Not in changing the world for the better But in being changed by the God who makes everything right; Not in possessing great achievements But in being possessed by the God who is perfect in all things.
Smarts, influence and prosperity are small accomplishments compared to an understanding and enjoyment of the best things about God. Our greatest characteristics have nothing to do with being exceptional and everything to do with being His.
“Let not the wise man boast in his wisdom, let not the mighty man boast in his might, let not the rich man boast in his riches, but let him who boasts boast in this, that he understands and knows me, that I am the LORD who practices steadfast love, justice, and righteousness in the earth. For in these things I delight, declares the LORD.” (Jeremiah 9:23-24)
